Copying goes hi-tech

Enter the low cost hi-tech Chinese pens which students are using to take them through the examinations.

Though education minister Upinder Jit Kaur has said no instance of copying will be tolerated during the board exams and the erring officials will be dealt with strictly, a Chinese pen, costing around Rs 20 has come in handy for the inventive students who have added this invisible-writing pen to their cheating devices.

Sources in the education department said after it decided to go strict with instances of cheating and the staff on examination duty become vigilant no paper slips or chits were being allowed in the examination centre.

The sources said during one such frisking exercise during the exam of the plus-two science stream a few days ago, a teacher found that some of the students had pasted white-blank papers on their clip boards.

The Spirit of Giving

More than 20 years ago, local volunteers recognized the difficulty the holidays bring for families who cant afford food and presents, for seniors who feel forgotten and for those without warm winter clothes. Truckee Community Christmas developed to lend a helping hand, bringing together many organizations including the Soroptimist, local Realtors, grocery stores and banks.

They collect food, clothing, and toys for Community Christmas to distribute during the holiday season. Its an umbrella organization for people in the community who want to give to families at Christmas time, said board president Joan Hartwell. It truly is the most wonderful time of year.

Randy was right to quit on the Raiders

But getting indignant about Moss quitting on Oakland, given the reputation of that franchise, is like being upset if someone is unfaithful to Britney Spears.

Besides, Moss has made far more careers than he's destroyed. What was Daunte Culpepper without Moss? What about Brian Billick, who built a reputation for being an offensive genius because he coached Moss in Minnesota? Pre-Moss, people still had their doubts about whether Tom Brady was a great quarterback or just the product of a great system. No one says that anymore. With Moss, Brady became an MVP, and is in line to be regarded as the best quarterback of all time.

I'd say sports karma is working just fine.

Accused killer pleads guilty to stabbing potential witness

The Macon man accused of killing a woman at the Good Shepherd House in September was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison Tuesday morning for stabbing another woman with a screwdriver.

Laury Smith, a 29-year-old homeless woman, was a potential witness against 47-year-old Richard Mullins, who is charged with the Sept. 10 stabbing death of 19-year-old Eliza "Alize" Williams, according to Bibb County assistant district attorney Nancy Scott Malcor.

Two days after Williams' death, Smith told police she was cutting through a wooded area when she felt something hit her from behind, Malcor said.

After falling to the ground, Smith said she saw Mullins standing over her hitting her in the head with a large rock, Malcor said.

Police questioned Smith and several other homeless people after Williams was found dead with multiple stab wounds to her head, chest and torso in the halfway house located on the corner of Second and Elm streets.

Fashion Disasters Averted!

"I'm one of those people who can just always find the dress. I can do that!" Phillip Bloch reminisces as we sit chatting at a really sad Golden Globes party. We're talking about what in palmier daysOK, last yearwas a totally fun time for Bloch, who has the dubious distinction of being considered the first celebrity stylist. On the night of the Globes, in non-writers'-strike times, a guy like Bloch would be zipping starlets into sequined tubes and then getting drunk with the rest of the glam squadnot hanging around on West 30th Street wearing a knit cap and a T-shirt featuring a map of Botswana.

The strike has sunk the Globes, which is why we are eating thin-crust pizza in an events space of breathtaking beauty created by another red-carpet fixture, Robert Verdi, who calls this place the Luxe Laboratory.
