| Saying buy-buy to economic blues BY THE NUMBERS
Gas costs $3 a gallon, the real-estate and stock markets are struggling, and food prices have risen. But you'd never know it if you visited the Spotsylania Towne Centre yesterday. Consumers flocked to the mall and other Fredericksburg-area shopping centers, as Black Friday ushered in the start of the holiday shopping period. Because of where Thanksgiving fell this year, the pre-Christmas shopping period is the longest possible. But many people didn't waste any time checking off their holiday gift lists. "This place is packed," Stafford County resident Lori Kasey said as she lugged numerous shopping bags outside Macy's. She'd bought some Heelys shoes and another item that was a secret. Kasey said it took her 20 minutes to find a parking spot.
Travels with Herb
Straight south today, from Tucumcari, New Mexico to Deming N.M. Very high country. For about the last 75 miles into Albuquerque, I was above 5000 feet elevation, and loosing power on the hills. Over nighted here, then west to Phoenix. I originally intended to meet friends and relatives here and stay a few days. After stopping for the night, I felt the pull of my children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren in California. I bailed out the next morning for Manteca, in the central valley of California. I made Barstow for the night, back on route 66 via I-40. The rig, at 117,000 miles, was purring like a kitten. Gas prices in California are obscene. I drove on into Manteca the following day and spent Thanksgiving with the whole gaggle. I'm Herb and I'm on a road trip.

Thought you'd like this one. At church a few weeks back, a couple renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The preacher asked them where they were married. The groom replied "Saint So-and-sos. And a short time after our wedding the church burned down and the priest died." Without missing a beat my preacher said "Would you mind if we did this outside?" I had the luck of being at the Packer game last Sunday. What a game and what a day! After spotting the Seahawks 14-points, the Packers looked like an absolutely unstoppable team. And when that snow fell down, it was like being inside a snow globe, you couldn't see the people who were sitting in the stands on the other side of the stadium. But it wasn't cold! In fact, I kept my gloves off for most of the game.
Furnaces, Space Heaters, Fireplaces Can Pose Health Risks
Space heaters can cause fires if they are placed too close to flammable materials such as drapes, furniture or bedding. Fireplaces can cause fires if the chimney is cracked, blocked or coated with creosote, or if sparks and embers reach flammable materials. Fuel-burning appliances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if they are improperly installed, poorly maintained, have defective or blocked venting systems, or are misused. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Marion County Health Department offer these tips to ensure all Indianapolis residents remain safe while staying warm.Space heater tips:* Place the heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface (such as ceramic tile floor), not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes. Keep the heater at least three feet from bedding, drapes, furniture and other flammable materials.

Sushi bar wrapped up in assaults
FREMONT A new sushi restaurant and nightclub kept police busy early Sunday morning as it has on other weekend nights and now officers plan to pay more attention to it. "We're going to put that place on our extra-patrol list," Sgt. Chris Mazzone said of Kaenyama Sushi, Teppanyaki & Bar at 43785 Boscell Road in the Pacific Commons shopping center. Police were called to the bar shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday to break up a fight in which one man was struck in the head with a beer bottle. Then at 2 a.m., police were dispatched to the ampm gas station at Grimmer Boulevard and Auto Mall Parkway where two men, who had been at the restaurant, beat up a third man while he was pumping gas, Mazzone said. The attackers shouted "gang-related terminology" at the victim and punched him in the face several times before two bystanders chased them away, Mazzone said.
Poland, August 1980: The proletariat rediscovers the weapon of the ...
Even if there were no direct strikes as a reaction to the Polish workers' struggles, the workers in many countries in the west took up the slogans of their class be slogans of their class brothers and sisters in Poland. In Turin in September 1980 the workers shouted: "Let's struggle as the Polish workers did". Because of its scope and its methods the mass strikes in Poland had a massive impact on workers in other countries. Through their mass strikes the workers showed – as they had already done in 1953 in East Germany, in 1956 in Poland and Hungary, 1970 and 1976 in Poland again – that the so-called ‘socialist' countries were in reality state capitalist governments, enemies of the working class. Despite the isolation imposed around the Polish borders, despite the Iron Curtain, the Polish working class, as soon as it took action, functioned as a massive pole of reference with a world wide impact.
