Sweden goes after Pirate Bay

Copyright limits, as the very name suggests, the right to copy. The original laws applied to printed materials, but the principle applies equally to music or film.

On any basis, copying copyrighted material is illegal. Borrowing, lending and otherwise sharing arguments do not diminish the legal requirements not to make copies. Most often these arguments are put forward by criminally liable parties to justify what they know is wrong.

However, in a world where technology has trumped legality, perhaps the parameters of copyright need to be examined. For instance, if a person in Canada likes the works of a musician in Australia (for example) and their music is not readily available because the record distributor has chosen to ignore the North American market, should those CD's be available for download? If the distributor has no intention of selling into a market, does he have a legitimate complaint if people in that market 'pirate' works he withholds?

This is the state British publishers once found themselves in when American publishers would ship best-selling books back to the US and print them without consideration of the British copyrights.

Victory, Glorypark play different positions in Dallas-Fort Worth

Victory Park has given a big boost to Dallas' center city with its luxury residences, W Hotel and exclusive retail stores.

Glorypark in Arlington may do even more for the suburbs.

Victory Park and Glorypark are near sports venues, and Dallas investor Tom Hicks is involved in both. At first glance, they even look alike in drawings.

The Glorypark complex south of Interstate 30 is planned as one of the country's most ambitious sports-anchored developments. The combination of shopping and entertainment, hotels, housing and office space is expected to cost more than $1 billion to build.

But Glorypark's developers – Hicks Holdings and Ohio-based Steiner + Associates – want their 70-acre project to have an even wider appeal than Victory Park.

Convenience quashes the shame of gift cards

Who cares that holiday spending fell short of expectations in 2007? The real shopping is happening right now.

Gift cards, according to a survey by American Express and the International Council of Shopping Centers, were the third most popular item during the holiday season, behind only clothing, CDs and DVDs. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will have spent $26.3 billion on gift cards last year, up from a paltry $18.5 billion two years ago. As bad as that news is for the wrapping paper industry, it's good news for the retail economy. Because gift card purchases aren't recorded until the card is actually redeemed, it's safe to say that the holiday shopping season will continue well into the new year.

I bought several gift cards this year, and the experience left me feeling empty and a bit ashamed.

Shopping Sprees Can Cost More Than You Think: How to Identify a ...

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- While shopping is usually viewed as a leisure activity by the general public, for one shopper in twenty, the habit is a process addiction. For these "shopaholics," trips to the mall are more than holiday buying and trying on new work clothes. Rather, their "retail therapy" is an expensive habit that can spiral into financial and emotional disaster.

"Addiction is a complex behavior," said Dr. Stephen Grinstead (http://www.therapistfinder.com/TherapistDetail.cfm?id=036560), licensed marriage and family therapist of CAMFT, "and most addictions fall in one of two categories: process or substance. Shopping addiction is a process addiction, similar to gambling, spending, eating, and sexual addictions that can have life-altering consequences."

Shopping addictions work like this: When one is feeling lonely, depressed, or stressed, s/he heads to a number of retailers.
