Dallas, I love you, but I've found Austin

There's something to be said for loose paper menus. Unlike the leather-bound ones, they're easy to manipulate. You can fold them and slip them into your coat or purse without arousing suspicion. They're easy reference points that can be consulted again and again—as the food arrives, as you eat, as you challenge a word in the descriptions. "This shrimp tastes like lobster." Did the chef change something out?

Baby wedge salad/Maytag dressing/apple wood-smoked bacon. This is the sum of words describing the classic "wedge" on the butcher paper menu at BLT Steak. "Wedge" seems too coarse a word for this delicate cross-section of lettuce with loose folds, specs of bacon in the channels and pebbles of blue cheese in the chambers. It looks like a set of concert shells or a cleaved nautilus. Shame to eat it.

Officials differ on charter response

It is an attempt to give more power to the executive branch. It centralizes power into fewer people's hands which mean that the elite class will have more control over the decision makers. The bankers, developers, etc. will have more power with these amemdments. We need more commissioners. Someone had said there were too many elected officials in Knox County. Most people do not vote on all the positions because a lot of them are in specific districts. There still could be minimum standards set for some of the elected positions. We have them for Sheriff and Judges. I am for having a vote; however, a vote is only as good as how informed the person is who votes. The group who created these recommendations are from the more affluent class. They have more influence than the general populace. The dissenting voice is less likely to be heard and thus a less balanced perspective when people go to vote.

Theaters shone in year of transition

Transition was the watchword for San Diego County's theater community during 2007.Theater organizations in North County and San Diego announced major transitions in leadership and location this year, and two locally born musicals began their transitions to the Broadway stage. This was also a year for stellar theater, with quality work produced at theaters both large and small.

Here's a look at the year that was.

Lifestyle Centers Mix Best Elements of Strip Centers, Malls

The hottest trend in retail isn't a brand but rather a name for a type of shopping experience—the “lifestyle center, which is sprouting throughout suburban America as both an adjunct to traditional malls and a stand-alone complex.

It is the shopping center industry's version of the “Back to the Future" movies where a professor and his associate travel back in time in a sports car.

This 21st century version usually includes a streetscape ambience in an outdoor setting with the attraction of high-end retailers combined with the drive-up convenience of a strip shopping center to create the look of a old-fashioned town square.

In addition to one approved shopping center expansion in Joliet and another also being considered in that city also (see related article on page 1), other locations in the western and southwestern suburban areas of planned or recent developments of this type include:

Oak Brook Promenade, at Butterfield and Meyers Roads.

Stock drop delays highest number of IPOs in 10 years

In the US, the S&P 500 dropped 14 percent from its record reached in October.

Apax bought Hilfiger in 2005 for US$1.6 billion after its red-white-and-blue-splashed clothing lost favor with teenagers. Tommy Hilfiger, which first went public in 1992, had planned to return to the market by listing shares in Amsterdam.

The market decline derailed the IPO of Dong Energy, which would have been Denmark's biggest in more than a decade, while Maoye cited "current turmoil in international capital markets" for its scrapped plans.

Solargiga Energy Holdings Ltd and SFK Construction Holdings Ltd canceled Hong Kong IPOs worth as much as a combined HK$3.3 billion (US$423 million) after the stock market tumbled, four people familiar with the decisions said yesterday.

Global Green Tech Group Ltd, a Hong Kong-based maker of personal-care products, canceled a planned HK$2.41 billion IPO by unit Bio Beauty Group Ltd because of "market conditions."

In the US, the largest deal to get pulled was the US$345 million sale of Imperium Renewables Inc, a Seattle-based biodiesel producer, which withdrew due to "unfavorable market conditions."

The window is still open to go public.
