They Didn’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow

The former community organizer from Chicago and the former Baptist preacher from Arkansas have little in common in terms of political views. But as I wrote here a month ago, the author of "The Audacity of Hope" and the new man from Hope, Ark., are flip sides of the same coin. The slogan "change" - a brand now so broad and debased that both Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney appropriated it for their own campaigns - does not do justice to the fresh starts that Mr. Obama and Mr. Huckabee represent.

The two men are the youngest candidates in the entire field, the least angry and the least inclined to seek votes by saturation-bombing us with the post-9/11 arsenal of fear. They both radiate the kind of wit and joy (and, yes, hope) that can come only with self-confidence and a comfort in their own skins.

Top economist says America could plunge into recession

Neither party wants to address the hard issues, and they all seem to have the full support of the establishment media. The average Joe is clueless: watching football games on the new flat panel TV, drinking beer, and playing with Christmas toys. The Nintendo Wii was hot this year.

Briefs: APD New Badges, Blanket Drive

In Monday's briefs, Christmas trees will arrive on hand at the Texas Capitol, you can spread some holiday cheer to troops serving abroad and more.

On Monday, Christmas trees will arrive on hand at the Texas Capitol. They'll arrive in a horse-drawn carriage. One of the trees will be designated as the Angel Tree and placed in the Capitol Extension. The Angel Tree will be decorated with gift tags for foster children under the care of Child Protective Services.

===================================

The Austin Police Department will soon be flashing some new badges. Officials said that APD officers currently share the logo with other city officials, but they're looking for something a little more unique.

The new badge would only be worn by APD employees.

Loonie surpasses $1.10 US

The Canadian dollar continued its lofty flight as it passed $1.10 US on Wednesday while the U.S. dollar continued to weaken.

Shortly after the start of trading in North America, the loonie was up more than 1.75 cents at $1.1027 US.

The U.S. dollar continued to lose ground against other currencies. The greenback fell to another record low of $1.4703 US against the euro, while the British pound hit $2.1051 US, a level not seen since since May 1981.

The latest of advance of the loonie will most likely send economists back to the drawing board to redo their forecasts for the dollar. The currency has appreciated much faster than many observers had been expecting.

The Canadian dollar regained parity with the U.S. greenback in September. The loonie has been setting new records since Oct.

Friday wild card

Chief Cliff Hayes' police department is top notch, too. For some reason, however, these and other city officials fail to understand how myopic the city appears each time it insists on being reimbursed for services provided for Sunday's Ironman Coeur d'Alene. Hayes insists that this year's bill from Post Falls for more than $10,800 is a good deal. It'll cost the city more than that to provide police and related services for the bicycle portion of the triathlon. But Hayes misses the larger picture. Major events like Ironman bring positive exposure and attract tens of thousands of participants and spectators. Ironman visitors will ring cash registers at hotels, motels, restaurants, cash stations, grocery stores and local shops in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and other area towns. The spillover alone should be worth more than $10,800 for Post Falls.

Spinoffs click with Malone

Barry Diller's decision to spin New York-based IAC/Interactive Corp. into five separate entities last week has the potential to create new opportunities and add shareholder value for Liberty Media Corp.

The Douglas County-based company applauded Diller's move last week. Liberty owns about 24 percent of IAC common stock, representing an approximate 55 percent "super-voting" interest. However, Diller, the IAC chairman and CEO, has the authority to vote Liberty's shares, based on a long-standing agreement.

"I think it goes a long way toward resolving what's been a longtime mild disagreement between Mr. Diller and myself about the appropriate use of leverage in each of these businesses," said Liberty chairman John Malone in a conference call with analysts Friday.

"I think it's terrific for us.
