Today on the presidential campaign trail

The man released at least three hostages, but was still holding one person at nightfall, nearly five hours after the ordeal began, according to a law enforcement source who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the situation.

Clinton was in the Washington area at the time, but the confrontation brought her campaign to a standstill just five weeks before the New Hampshire primary, one of the first tests of the presidential campaign season. She canceled all appearances, as did her husband, and the security around her was increased as a precaution.

In an early evening news conference, Capt. Paul Callaghan repeatedly refused to say how many hostages had been taken.

The man entered the simple storefront office along the town's main street around 1 p.m., ordered people onto the floor and then let a mother and her baby leave, said State Police Maj.

He Shops, She Shops

This season, my colleague Alan Murray and I set out to find luxury gifts for the opposite sex -- for less. One strategy: Buying from a high-end designer's lower-priced line. You can also try bargain hunting at the outlet mall, on the Web or at big-box discounters, where the wrapping may not be as nice but the price is right.

Here are some ideas:

Patterned Ties. As much as I love power ties from Hermès and Salvatore Ferragamo, at about $140 to $150 a pop, they seem steep this year. You can get similar designs featuring whimsical figures from Vineyard Vines, a company based in Martha's Vineyard that specializes in the preppy look. Though some look a little goofy, I found nice-looking ties with a rope-and-starfish and an orca-whale pattern. $65 from vineyardvines.com.

Alan responds: Off to a good start.

Spears' multi-million dollar economy

News and pictures of troubled pop star Britney Spears are now so profitable the singer is said to have created her own economy.

Spears herself is said to be worth an estimated $125 million and earns over $700,000 a month in interest from her own personal accounts, but that pales in comparison to the vast sums she makes for other sectors of the entertainment industry.

A new survey by Portfolio Magazine has revealed that since launching her career eight years ago the 26-year-old has pulled in excess of $400 million for her record label Jive, $150 million for tour promoters and venues and her two-endorsed perfumes are reported to have made beauty manufacturer Elizabeth Arden approximately $100 million since their launch.

Spears is also said be of great value to the publishing industry - a cover featuring the star is believed to increase interest in a magazine by a massive 33 percent.
