EU and Asean urge Myanmar to free detainees

We welcome the decision of the government of Myanmar to step up its engagement with the U.N. and to enter into a dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, recalling that such a dialogue should be conducted with all concerned parties and ethnic groups,' said the joint declaration of the Asean-EU Summit.

The joint declaration also said the two groupings would be mindful of the different levels of development and capacity in moving towards a free trade deal.

Talks over a free trade agreement kicked off in May but have made little progress since then.

While EU officials and diplomats welcomed a new Asean charter - which enshrines principles of democracy and human rights, economic integration and environmental protection - they criticised the organisation's handling of military-ruled Myanmar.

Diller vs Malone

With friends like John Malone, the world's most powerful media executives could do without enemies.

The cable industry mogul – who won the nickname Darth Vader because of his ruthless dealmaking style – is at it again, and in spectacular style.

He has turned on his long-time ally, the television executive-turned-internet entrepreneur Barry Diller, and is trying to oust him from the helm of his internet empire, IAC/InterActiveCorp.

Mr Diller has shot back that Mr Malone's reasons are "incomprehensible" and that his people have gone "insane", but the situation last night was that both men stubbornly insisted that they controlled the company. It promises to be a doozy of a media feud.

IAC is Mr Diller's publicly quoted holding company, whose businesses include the box office website Ticketmaster, the upstart search engine Ask.com and the home shopping channel HSN.

USF nearing midnight

In 2006, it was Rutgers but 2007 is the year of the Bulls.

South Florida, whose season began with talk of being only a conference darkhorse, has shocked everyone in college football, and currently sits at No. 2 in the BCS rankings.

It is true that part of the Bulls upswing is because of the amount of upsets in the top five this season, but they are by no stretch lucky.

The South Florida defense led by stud linebacker Ben Moffitt is reminiscent of the Scarlet Knight defense of a year ago. The Bulls' repression of offensive powerhouse West Virginia in late September catapulted them into the national spotlight.

It was that same spotlight that doomed Rutgers last season, but South Florida's coach Jim Leavitt is the steadying force that a young team like the Bulls need to stay successful.

40m IPTV households expected worldwide by 2010

BSkyB chief executive James Murdoch has revealed that the group is developing a "hybrid" media model using its satellite and digital terrestrial platforms to allow subscribers to access content seamlessly from TVs, PCs or mobiles.

In an FT.com interview, Murdoch also rejected claims that his aggressive strategy had exposed it to possible regulatory punishment, saying: "When we go out there and we say we're going to challenge some of those big incumbent telecoms companies who've been charging too much money for too little to too many customers for way too long, we think that's good for customers. Ultimately, we think that really matters from a regulatory perspective as well. Our customers [are] free agents in this."

40m IPTV households expected worldwide by 2010

Forecasts from analyst firm Canalys indicate the IPTV market will see rapid growth over the next three years, driven by telecom operatorsÂ’ desire to boost ARPU (average revenue per user) and counter the growing threat from competing triple-play providers.

VMware revenue falls short, shares off 26.5 percent

That would suggest revenue of $2 billion, just shy of Wall Street targets.

VMware is partial spin-off of computer storage maker EMC Corp (EMC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , whose shares fell 11.5 percent.

VMware shares had more than quadrupled in value since an August initial public offering on high expectations for its virtualization software for managing computer networks, but the stock has dropped since November.

"If you miss your numbers in just your second quarter after going public that suggests the stock was overhyped," said Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research.

"The story is not as perfect as investors believe. Oracle and Microsoft and Citrix (CTXS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) have spoiled VMware's party. Not only that, VMware execution has been flawed.
