Chinatrust mortgage loans hit P1.2B in end-Sept

Chinatrust Commercial Bank Corp. said Monday it posted a significant growth in its retail mortgage loans, driven by high take-up of its Cashback Mortgage product.

In a statement, the bank president Joey Bermudez said Chinatrust's mortgage loan portfolio hit P1.22 billion as of end-September, higher than the P940 million recorded in the same period last year.

Bermudez said the bank's Cashback Mortgage product has been popular with high net worth individuals and businessmen because it cuts their interest expense while they maintain their savings or current accounts with Chinatrust.

Under this arrangement, the amount placed under deposit is deducted from the aggregate loan amount when determining the interest rate to be charged on the loan.

Leafs vs. next opponent

SUNRISE, Fla. – Pavel Kubina scored a power-play goal 34 seconds into overtime to help the Toronto Maple Leafs snap a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Kyle Wellwood also scored for Toronto, which improved to 2-3 on its franchise record-tying, seven-game road trip. Tomas Kaberle and Mats Sundin each had two assists.

Olli Jokinen scored for the Panthers, which had won three straight.

Vesa Toskala stopped 29 shots for the Leafs, while Tomas Vokoun made 29 saves for Florida.

With Richard Zednik in the penalty box for slashing, Kubina beat Vokoun with a slap shot from the right point.

Toronto almost broke the 1-1 tie midway through the third period, but Vokoun made a spectacular pad save on Nikolai Antropov's one-timer off Matt Sundin's pass.

Ramtha school takes on teacher

You have to put people on notice about what's copyrighted and what's not, but they didn't," Swanson said. "It's not a copyright case, which is what it should be.

"The case raises some interesting and novel legal issues," he said.

The case centers on the testimony of Chelsea Spooner, a Ramtha school student for14 years. Spooner testified in a written declaration that she attended Weaver's five-day, $625 workshop, "An Equation for a Great Life: Health, Wealth and Wisdom," from Aug. 2-6, 2006, at the request of Ramtha school spokesman Mike Wright.

Spooner said Weaver's workshop contained terms that were "unmistakably used in RSE teachings."

Spooner also noted in court documents that Weaver taught basic elements of a classic Ramtha school technique.

In it, several hundred Ramtha students walk or run across a field while blindfolded.

War Blog

He also rebutted their contention that Obama has been inconsistent in his opposition to the war in Iraq and said Obama represents a new era and a rejection of "old politics."

Huh? No one represents "old politics" better than Ted Kennedy. In fact, Bill Clinton's ascension in 1992 came in large part from a push by the Democratic Leadership Council, which formed as a means to promote a new center-Left direction to abandon the hard-Left policies that had begun to marginalize the Democratic Party, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union. Ted Kennedy served as the epitome of the Old Guard that opposed the DLC's rejection of traditional Democratic populism.

Kennedy is trying to bring back old-school Democratic politics, but with a younger face.

This will definitely increase the tension in the party between its two potential standard-bearers.

Georgia Power signs deal with biomass plant

Georgia Power signed a contract this week that will more than double its renewable energy supplies in two years.

And the press release announcing that renewable contract was barely out the door when the company signed another one it isn't ready to talk about yet.

Rome in Winter: What to Eat, What to Do

I love it. I come in every season, so I can say with some authority that in certain ways this may be the best time to visit. Many trees may be bare, but Rome is filled with umbrella pines and date palms, enough green for me. I don't know what this is about, but towering umbrella pines and date palms make my heart go pitter-pat. And I can still pick fragrant bay leaves (laurel) from the many evergreen bushes, a favorite potted plant used to enclose the street-side restaurant seating on almost every block. Even in winter, Romans sit outside, albeit under gas heaters set under umbrellas. Red, pink and white cyclamens are everywhere. True, the weather is a bit of a drawback. The days have been rainy and warmish alternating with sunny and coldish.

Maybe best of all, hardly anyone is out and about.
